The bottom consists of highly standardized services that have become commodities, such as hardware manufacturing. The top layor is tailored technology services. Examples given are Accentures development of tracking technology for an Austrailian casino, IBM's application of airline route models to a limousine company, and Atos origin providing a technology to help British cops pull people over. The middle level consists of services such as call centers and business process outsourcing. These are in the process of becoming standardized to the point of becoming best practices. The article goes on to say that the current boom in the IT industry in India is thanks to this level, where companies take advantage of the transition. It also makes a point about competition between new Indian IT companies with knowlege of their home turf and large multinationals who have experience but can't shift resources to low-cost India as quick as the new firms can start up. The article makes a interesting point about how it seems the top tier is what will be important in the end. The focus on the middle tier represents a temporary shift based on new methods of cost reduction. However, in terms of development, cost reduction is truly important. However, I'm much more interested in innovation and design, which seems to be what this top tier is about. TCS, Wipro, and Cognizant are some of the Indian firms mentioned, and IBM and Accenture are some of the MNC's. What kind of top tier activities do these firms have going for them? Got a well needed rest and got a new project to work on. Turns out after all my worrying i got an A-. After speaking with my guidance counselor, i learnt the best lesson i will carry with me througout the course. In a doctoral program, all that matters is that you learn something new and get at least a B! No one cares about your GPA or where you went to, just your accomplishments. What a true comment. </P> <P>I've not been one thats been into grades and was happy that others feel the same way. In my undergrad days, i was never really an A student as i mostly searched for practicality of the content of the coursework. Well with that done i hope to try and practice what i learnt, which was writing in the APA format. My goal would be to write one topic a week in disruptive technology, the capital markets and politics. In researching, i learnt how to use google to get a whole bunch of definitions from multiple sources with references. IT would prove invaluable to me as i pursue this program. In my personal life, i realized that i am a critical thiniker. From the time i was young child i was not one to accept everything as face value. I was able to implement my various tools to make my life easier. I was able to use my blog as a writing tool to develop the writing of my assignment by revising and make changes easily till I had a final product to present. On scheduling and prioritizing, I adhered to most of my plans for the week using outlook and my new pda phone which integrates with outlook seamlessly. I was able to be constantly alert as to what was needed to be done regardless of where I was and if I had my pc or not. The only problem was the time allocation. </P> <P>The assignments for the week where a little more than I bargained for but I was able to pull through all of them. The week&#8217;s content was a life saver. I was able to research on stress and learnt so much about how to manage my stress levels and realized a lot of issues I experienced where stress related. As the saying goes, "knowledge is power". With the knowledge I got from the exercise, I was able to realize that the problems caused by stress where way more than I had imagined. I got to save a few bookmarks on holistic living and added relaxation techniques to my weekly task list. The dialogue showed me how nice this program was going to be as I got to see divergent approaches, experiences and techniques to addressing what I thought was a simple question that had a standard set of answers. </P> <P>The self assessment was a great exercise for me personally, as it gave me a chance to put more information about myself on paper. My first profile was very basic and the self assessment allowed me to dig down to search for what drives me. It also allowed me to know what my areas of improvement where after going through one week in the program. It allowed me to test the writing skill tool on the University of Phoenix website. I did have difficulties initially but eventually realized what was wrong. It turns out that the tool works best with only Internet Explorer. I particularly liked the review that came back as it exposed a little problem I have which was my choice of words in writing. I tend to use informal words in formal papers. </P> <P>The teamwork exercise was very interesting to say the least. I have worked mostly in situations that required teamwork so it was up my alley. The exercise with my Team A went well but I felt it could have been more cohesive and the deliverables evenly distributed. For a first attempt at team work in an online venue I think it was marvelous. I gave myself a good rating for not dwelling or bringing up certain issues in the interest of making sure the team didn't have problems achieving its team goal. In summary, when one isn't a leader of a team, and there is a deliverable due in a short period of time with the team facing many obstacles, it is best to play along and produce the best product given the conditions. In a team there is no &#8220;I&#8221; just &#8220;WE&#8221;. This weeks dialoguing was the most fun for me. The material covered for the week applied directly to me so it was much easier to make comments on and follow. </P> <P>The highlight was the dialogue with Ginny and Shawna on empathy in organizational settings. I wished I could have had a face to face with both of them as it was very interesting but it also seemed to drift a way from the point. That&#8217;s one of the drawbacks of the online based system, certain words and can have different meanings and the underlying issue discussed can turn into a different discussion. The lesson for the week was stress management. While reading, dialoguing, i posted a sort of unique approach to combating stress. From my experience, most workplace stress is cause by lack of information, lack of clarity of direction, job descriptions and workload. Once those key questions are answered and there is an environement of direct communication between senior management, middle management and the rest of the workforce most of the battle is won. I stumbled on some tips for stress in general and thought i'd post some of what i came across: "Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances." &#8212;Thomas Jefferson </P> <P>The word 'stress' is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy". A condition or circumstance (not always adverse), which can disturb the normal physiological and psychological functioning of an individual. In medical parlance 'stress' is defined as a perturbation of the body's homeostasis. This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant changes in life. A 'stress' condition seems 'relative' in nature. Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is synonymous with negative conditions. I was shocked and surprised to find out that stress caused so much problems and even cancer. Yes "cancer". I was however happy to discover that the first step towards curbing stress is to change ones lifestyle entirely. If you can't stand the heat jump out of the pot (or what ever that quote is). </P> <P>The techniques that work out for me and that have helped reduce my stress tremendously are : </P> <P>1. Exercise, <BR>2. Supplements, vitamins and energy drinks, <BR>3. Soothing music, the past few months in particular i have found myself extremely relaxed especially after going to bed with Enya or my endless nameless trance music artists and waking up to NPR and not FOX news : ). </P> <P>I am thinking of finding out if yoga will do it. I have heard great things but have never gotten time for it. Maybe i will make time on Saturday for it and practice time management. I also got to learn that not all stress is bad. As a matter of fact, some people like me need some stress to rise to the occassion at times. Sudha Chandran, an Indian danseus, lost both of her legs in an accident. But, the physical and social inadequacies gave her more impetus to carry on with her dance performances with the help of prosthetic legs rather than deter her spirits. However, what i need to improve on is to clean the cobwebs in my mind. The good part of it all is that it is a start towards becoming a much more well rounded and articulate individual. Who knew to be a great leader and to be called an expert in ones field there was a need to be a master communicator and reference citing guru : ) Apparently not me : ). Sure can't wait to breeze through the second week. </P> <P>My game plan will be to get all the papers done over the weekend and sail through the rest of the week with my dialoguing. </P> <P>Things to do for the weekend: </P> <UL> <LI>Synchronize all my files and emails between my three pcs (why do i still work on three different pc's?) </LI> <LI>Create file server for all my cd-roms and yes my music. (just learnt a lot of cd-r's have a shelf life of 2 - 4 years and just noticed quite a few are failing on me) </LI> <LI>Synchronize my contacts, task list and calendar on my laptop, phone and desktop. In my case, it was the use of the MLA format. The first week allowed me to realize what my weaknessed where and to know what to expect down the line. The realization I came to was that I needed to work on time management and scheduling. The key thing to conquer this I learned, is to prioritize and make use of many tools such as my calendar and task list. It is very important to realize what one&#8217;s dragon is and tackle it. With the doctoral program lasting three years, I believe as I go along, I will get into a routine that will make me a much more organized professional. I do have a high drive and entrepreneurial spirit, so I was fully aware of what my professional goals were. In the first week, I did come to the realization that to achieve them I need to be able to come across in a clear and concise fashion. </P> <P>To achieve my goals, I came to the realization I needed to be a good critical thinker and be able to make comments with proper sources to back them as well. I also learnt that while an entrepreneurial spirit cannot be learned but come naturally, leadership skills are learned. William Koh (2003) highlights the skills needed, &#8220;leaders in the 21st Century ought to be visionaries, interpersonally competent, skilful communicators and motivators, team builders, willing and able to empower others, and developers of other leaders. I would like to group this set of must-have qualities as core leadership skills.&#8221;(page 9) I clearly came to the realization that to become a great leader there will be a need to have certain leadership skills such as skilful communication.. Along that same line, the first week also taught me that I could be plagiarizing when trying to get a point across either in a business proposal or technical plan. I learnt that even something as simple as a diagram required a source. With the plagiarism exercise on the University of Phoenix&#8217;s site and the comments from Doctor Dora, I learnt that regardless of the sector one works in plagiarism was still plagiarism. I also learnt how to write papers properly and cite my references according to the APA publication manual. I did enjoy the dialog process as it was a new experience for me. I got to learn about my strengths and weaknesses based on the writing styles of others. The only problem I had with the process was that some of my postings were not answered or commented on. I also couldn&#8217;t carryout detailed dialogues with some others because of their nature that focused on nursing. </P> <P>Last but not the least, I setup a blog dedicated to the doctoral program with hopes to use it as a research journaling tool over the course of the program. I have also started to work on organizing all my numerous documents, bookmarks, electronic books and applications in order to be extremely organized. I hope to have it all done by this weekend and believe it would be the last thing needed to put me on full track to tackle the program and quest to learn to be a great leader. </P> <P>Koh, William.
